On the state of EV taxis & charging stations in NYC

Okay, so New York City has this 2030 target of a 100% electric for-hire vehicle fleet, Lyft and Uber included. NYC’s Department of Transportation aims to install 6,000 fast chargers by 2030.

NYC’s Taxi and Limousine Commission currently counts 100,000 vehicles as licensed. But a meager 34 taxis and 1,125 other for-hire vehicles on that roster are electric.

And of those 1,159 are electric, just 10 are affiliated with the 700+ livery and black car bases in New York City.

57% of NYC’s current 169 fast chargers — spread across ca 40 spots within the five boroughs — are exclusively for Tesla vehicles.

50% of fast chargers are paywalled in New York City — meaning they are placed in parking garages or are restricted to customers, think hotel guests.

Some 1,800 public Level 2 chargers (4 to 10 hours) are spread out on 500+ locations.

About 70% of public Level 2 chargers in New York City are paywalled.
